Clouds fill the sky behind the buildings of Panama City, Panama, during our 2024 Panama Trip.
I liked this view of the city buildings of Panama City from Panama Viejo. It was a contrast between the old, old buildings of the original city with the new, modern buildings being built today. Of course, in this view you can only see the new buildings, but you can see the old buildings with the new buildings in that earlier post.
A tree is silhouetted against the sky in Panama City, Panama.
During our walk back from a beach in Panama, I saw this tree that I found to be interesting. Looking back now, I am not entire sure if I was interested in the tree or in the turkey vultures sitting in the top branches of the tree. We have turkey vultures just like those back here at home in Tennessee, so it was interesting to see them there in Panama. Interesting fact: Most of the time here in North America when people see a bird that they think is a buzzard, it is actually a turkey vulture.
The bell towers of the Metropolitan Cathedral in Panama City, Panama, against a stormy sky.
During our 2024 Panama trip, we visited the Metropolitan Cathedral one afternoon while we were walking around in Casco Viejo, and you can see photos from the interior of the cathedral in this post and also read more about its history.
Palm trees reach for the sky near Panama Bay at Panama City, Panama, during our Panama 2024 trip.
Yes, there are a lot of Panamas in that previous sentence. And no, Panama does not pay me for every time I say Panama. But if they are interested in doing so, I am open to negotiation. Have your people call my people.
Walking along a street in the Casco Viejo area of Panama City, Panama, during our 2024 Panama Trip.
At the end of our week in Panama, our group took a day to see some of the sights. After visiting the Panama Canal and Panama Viejo, we went to the area known as Casco Viejo.
A beautiful red hibiscus flower hangs from overhead near Panama City, Panama.
For whatever reason, it had not crossed my mind that there would be hibiscus flowers in Panama. I had expected to see them on our Hawaiʻi trip, but not during our Panama trip. So I was pleasantly surprised to see these flowers there. Admittedly, before our trip I did not look up what kinds of flowers grow in Panama. I just figured we would see what we would see.
The ornate altarpiece of the Metropolitan Cathedral in Panama City, Panama, which we visited during our 2024 Panama trip.
Although this is not the type of church we attend, we stopped in to have a look around, and it was beautiful to see. The full name of the building is the Metropolitan Archcathedral Basilica of Santa María la Antigua, or Catedral Basílica Santa María la Antigua de Panamá in Spanish.
A mountain and the skyline of Panama City, Panama, rise in the distance behind the waters of Panama Bay off the Pacific Ocean, as seen during our 2024 Panama trip.
Our Panama 2024 trip was more of a working trip than a sightseeing trip, but we still got to see a few of the sites while we were there, and it was interesting to learn some of the history of Panama.
One of the places we visited was Panamá Viejo, or Old Panama. Panamá Viejo was the original Panama City, although it was destroyed in 1671 during a raid by Henry Morgan1. After that, Panama City was built on a new site a few miles away. However, some of the ruins of the original city remain, and they are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As we climbed up a mountain in Panama, we had an incredible view. A photo actually does not capture it well, believe it or not.
On this particular day in our Panama 2024 trip, we went to visit some of the church members in their homes. One of the homes was way up a mountain. Perhaps the title of the post is a little misleading, in case you thought we went mountain climbing, but maybe not quite so much…
