Covered Bridge in Roann, Indiana

A covered bridge crosses the Eel river in Roann, Indiana, as seen during a June 2024 visit.

The bridge was built in 1877, according to the sign, and still has traffic to this day. I would assume (and hope) that not all of the wood is original, but that does not make the bridge any less interesting to see.

We would have driven over the bridge, but when we arrived we discovered that it was being used as a venue for a baseball team fundraiser. At one end of the bridge, tables and chairs were set up for a meal. So we did not get to drive across the bridge, but that was okay.

We did walk part of the way through the bridge, but we turned around when we got close to where the tables were set up. We did not want to get in the way of what they were doing, after all.

Here you can see the Eel River1 that the bridge crosses. It is not a fast-moving river, but it does flow a little more than how this photo might make it look. This does also give you a better idea of the length of the bridge. And I found it interesting that there were “windows” that could be open at one end of the bridge, which was where the tables were set up for the meal.

We were in Warsaw, Indiana, with the Riedels to see our friend Katie in the first of three summer musical theatre shows. As we were looking for something to do, Laura found that this covered bridge was about 30 minutes away. The bridge and the community of Roann were interesting to see, and were a nice diversion for our day.

We saw a few other things in Roann, and I will share those sometime in the future, too.

Travels with Friends

As I mentioned above, our reason for being in Indiana in the first place was that we were traveling with friends who are like family. We have lots of good times together, and it is always fun to do things together.

It is nice to have acquaintances, but it is even better to have close friends. It is one thing to know someone, but it is another to know that someone would do whatever they could do for you if the need aries.

Do what you can to find close friends, and to be a close friend to someone.

And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.. - Luke 6:31

About the Photos

These photos have the look of the HDR photos of old, especially with the dramatic cloud cover. However, unlike the old days of HDR photos2, which required multiple exposures, each of these was produced with only one Raw exposure. That saves a lot of memory card space! I had been wanting to do some more photos with that type of look, and the Eel River Bridge was the perfect candidate. If you are curious, the first photo above is my favorite of this group, and is closest to the look I was wanting to achieve.

Photo: Each photo is a single Raw exposure, processed in Raw Therapee and GIMP.
Camera: Sony Alpha A7 II
Lens: Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens
Date: June 8, 2024
Location: Roann, Indiana

  1. No, we did not see any eels. But I did wonder if there were some there. ↩︎

  2. I had written some posts about HDR photography in the past, but most of the images in those posts are missing. I should track them down sometime. However, you can read about creating a type of HDR using multiple exposures from the same Raw file in this post. But keep in mind that I did not use that process for these bridge photos. ↩︎
