Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Virginia

Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Virginia

During our trip to Winchester, Virginia, and Washington, DC, we visited the Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester. If you know much about Laura and me, you know we love a good cemetery. And this one had lots of interesting history. Here is just a little of what we saw. For starters, the Gatehouse at the Mount Hebron Cemetery was an impressive structure. Although you cannot see it well here, you enter the cemetery by driving through an arched opening at the center of the building. In this photo, you can see the top of the arch behind the bush at the center of the photo.
Diamond Head Lighthouse in Hawaii

Diamond Head Lighthouse in Hawaii

The Diamond Head lighthouse is seen from the top of Diamond Head on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi, seen here during our June 2023 visit. From way up here, the lighthouse looks rather small. Named Lēʻahi in Hawaiian, you probably recognize Diamond Head from all those beach photos from Waikīkī, with the volcanic mountain looming in the distance. The lighthouse out in front of the mountain is not as well known, and as you can see, the mountain towers over the lighthouse.
Manoa Falls Trail in Hawaii

Manoa Falls Trail in Hawaii

We saw lots of natural growth on the trail to Mānoa Falls on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi during our June 2023 trip. Looking at this photo, you would almost expect an Ewok to jump out from behind one of those trees. Or maybe Bigfoot. Except that everyone knows Bigfoot does not live in Hawaiʻi. And Ewoks are on Endor.
Reelfoot Lake State Park in Tennessee

Reelfoot Lake State Park in Tennessee

A wooden boardwalk winds through cypress trees along the edge of the lake at Reelfoot Lake State Park in Tennessee. Recently, a group from our church went to eat lunch at Boyette’s, a catfish restaurant near Reelfoot. Nothing against the rest of the group, which are all fine people, but Laura and I decided to take our own car instead of riding the bus and then see if we could find any adventures after we ate.
Waves on Kaena Point Beach in Hawaii

Waves on Kaena Point Beach in Hawaii

Waves crash into rocks along the shoreline at Kaʻena Point State Park on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi. We visited Kaʻena Point State Park early in our trip, as we were looking to check out some of the beaches of Oʻahu. If you have not already done so, you might want to read about it in Part 4 of the trip report.
Tucker 48 Automobile in the Smithsonian

Tucker 48 Automobile in the Smithsonian

A Tucker 48 automobile is on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, as seen during our July 2023 visit. One of the distinctive features of a Tucker 48 is its third headlight in the center of the car. That headlight would turn when the front wheels turned, illuminating the road in the direction of travel.
Lighting Up the Night in Hawaii

Lighting Up the Night in Hawaii

Lanterns hang from tree limbs at the Four Seasons Resort along the shore on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi. As you might know from reading our Hawaiʻi 2023 trip report, we went for a walk every evening of our stay at the Disney resort of Aulani. On our very first night there, we walked past the Four Seasons Resort, which was right next door in the Ko Olina resort area. These lanterns were hanging in a tree near the path, and of course I could not resist taking a photo.
Steam Locomotive in the Smithsonian

Steam Locomotive in the Smithsonian

The steam locomotive Jupiter of the Santa Cruz Railroad is on display in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, DC. As we were wandering through the museum, Laura and I both saw the Jupiter at the same time. Laura said, “Did you know they have a train in here?” I did not, because if I had known, we would have gone to find it earlier in our visit. We just happened upon it, and I was glad that we did.
Kaena Point Lifeguard Station in Hawaii

Kaena Point Lifeguard Station in Hawaii

A lifeguard station on the beach at Kaʻena Point State Park on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi, as seen during our June 2023 Hawaiʻi Trip. During our visit to Kaʻena Point, we happened to walk by the lifeguard station, which looked to me to be a good photo opportunity. For whatever reason, lifeguard stations are interesting to me, such as this one at Cocoa Beach, Florida and this one on the Hawaiian island of Kauaʻi. In fact, the Kauaʻi station linked above looks very similar to this one, which would make sense as they are both part of the Hawaiʻi parks system.
